The Human Gnome Project

Advantages

  • Predict and prevent diseases - doctors could individually tailor medicines to certain diseases and ensure early treatment if they knew which gene caused which illness. Cures could be found for genetic diseases also.
  • Designing better medicines - scientists could understand how individual bodies will react to the disease and to the possible treatments. Knowing how a disease affects us on a molecular level makes it possible to design more effective treatments.
  • Accurate diagnosis - If we know the genetic cause of a disease, accurate testing will be a lot easier.
  • Improving forensic science -  Forensic scientists can produce a DNA fingerprint from biological material found at a crime scene and can match the suspects dna. In the future, it may be possible for the suspects looks to be figured out from the DNA.

Disadvantages

  • Increased Stress - If someone knew from an early age that they're susceptible to a disease, they may worry about it all the time.
  • Gene-ism - People with genetic problems could come under pressure to not have children.
  • Discrimination by employers and insurers - Life insurance could be very difficult to get. Any employers may discriminate against people who are genetically likely to get a disease.

Evaluation

Thousands of scientists from all over the world collaborated and worked together on the HGP to find every single human gene.
