The Eden Project

Advantages

  • The Eden project has brought 4000 jobs to the area of Cornwall
  • Unemployment has decrease by 6%
  • The demand for accommodation in Cornwall has doubled since 2001 (when the Eden Project opened)
  • Food served at  The Eden Project is sourced from local farmers
  • Built on a brownfield site, teaches visiting people about how to be more eco-friendly
  • Brings 75000 people annually

Disadvantages

  • Traffic has greatly increased in the surrounding area, this means delivery time for certain business are delayed
  • The build up of traffic has caused a great increase in pollution (IRONIC!)
  • Due to traffic build up the value of surrounding houses has decreased
  • Most of the people employed are over 50, this means there are less opportunities for younger people

Evaluation

To summarise the Eden Project is a successful rebranding strategy for economic reasons, as it employs and brings tourism to the area thus increasing the multiplier effect of Cornwall. However when taking into account environmental factors the strategy has not been quite as successful as it has caused increased pollution both from car emissions and noise pollution from cars. But the Eden Project thus teach visitors about eco-friendly strategies, this could counteract the pollution from the cars. We should also take into account the social factors. The Eden Project has brought employment both full and part time employment, which means an increase of employment are therefore a decrease in crime. This is likely to attract investment. HOWEVER increase of traffic and decrease in housing value is likely to decrease social wellbeing in the area. To conclude the Eden Project has been successful by bringing in more money into the area and attracting some investment, but without a rang of young skilled workers setting permanent residence in the area it is unlikely to bring in a great deal of investment.
