The use of Statins

Advantages

They reduce the amount of bad cholesterol in the blood and so they reduce the risk of strokes, heart attacks and cardiovascular disease
They can also increase the amount of good (HDL) cholesterol in the blood, which can remove the bad cholesterol
Studies suggest that they can also help prevent other disease

Disadvantages

They are a long term drug that must be taken regularly and can have side effects if they are forgotten
They can have negative side effects like headaches and possibly kidney failure
It takes time for the effects of statins to be felt

Evaluation

I would say that using statins for people with a very high risk of cardiovascular disease or a heart attack would be beneficial for them despite the possible side effects
