The use of Statins

  • They reduce the amount of bad cholesterol in the blood and so they reduce the risk of strokes, heart attacks and cardiovascular disease
  • They can also increase the amount of good (HDL) cholesterol in the blood, which can remove the bad cholesterol
  • Studies suggest that they can also help prevent other disease

  • They are a long term drug that must be taken regularly and can have side effects if they are forgotten
  • They can have negative side effects like headaches and possibly kidney failure
  • It takes time for the effects of statins to be felt

I would say that using statins for people with a very high risk of cardiovascular disease or a heart attack would be beneficial for them despite the possible side effects
