The Treaty of Versailles

Advantages

  • Bought peace to Europe - set up the League of Nations
  • Lenient towards Germany - remained 1 country, population 60 million as opposed to France's 40 million
  • Germany had imposed a harsher treaty on Russia 1918 - Russia lost nearly 1/3 land area

Disadvantages

  • Left Germany with a number of grievances
  • Germany couldn't afford to pay the reparations - had to borrow from USA
  • Britain and France disputed over reparation payments
  • Treaty punnished Germany enough to make them want revenge - not enough to recover and seek revenge
  • Wilson pinned too much hope on the league of nations

Evaluation

The treaty was very unfair to Germany, and although it was set up with the aim of restoring the other countries involved, it angered Germany, giving them reason to cause further conflict. The treaty also contradicted the League of Nations' aim to restore peace as it started unnecessary conflict.
