The Role of Learning in Food Preference

Advantages

  • SHORT AND LONG TERM EFFECTS - Family influences on food preferences can last a lifetime, however media is short lived. Here-Bruun et al 2011 found the children who watch most TV had the most unhealthy food preferences, although this link was weaker after a 6 year follow up and had disappeared altogether for girls.

Disadvantages

  • LIMITED ROLE OF CLASSICAL CONDITIONING - Flavour-flaviour learning may be less crucial in food preferences than other learning mechanisms. E.g. there is substantial evidence that repeatedly feeding a child a new food without need to sweeten it first. Of course, this explanation just reinforces the general point that experience is central to development of food preference, regardless of specific learning processes involved.
