The Cosmological Argument

Advantages

  • its a posteriori- based on observation, evidence-facts
  • Leibniz-God's a sufficient reason for our existence
  • Copleston- there must be a cause for our existence and the universe
  • Big Bang
  • Contingency- know the universe will probably end- God as a sustainer
  • logical- nothing creates itself- observation tell us
  • God is not bound by universal laws- operates outside time and space
  • infinite regress is unlikely- Aquinas' theory rejects infinite regress

Disadvantages

  • Russel- the universe is a brute fact- it just is- needs no explanation
  • Newtons first law of motion- nothing moves itself- force and air resistence
  • Big Bang
  • Steady state theory
  • Hume- not there to experience the beginning of the universe
  • Kant-empiricism
  • circular logic- everything is caused yest God is an uncaused cause
  • no point in looking outside our universe for an explanation is illogical- beyond human comprehension- Russell
  • Miller -why do we need an explanation for the universe
  • Kant - we can't know the nature of god
  • Hume- inductive leap- not empirical
  • Kant -fallacy of composition- can't assume everything has a cause
  • Dawkins- cosmic fairy tale- science is more rational

Evaluation

The disadvantages of the argument and scholarly criticisms far outweigh the advantages.
