The Barebones Parliament

The Barebones Parliament

Advantages

  • Made up of what Cromwell thought were Godly, pious men
  • Large range of all ranks of social class and religious attitudes

Disadvantages

  • New party would be nominated, not elected
  • Problems over tithes, worries from more moderate members about attacks on property
  • Radicals wanted to get rid of a maintained ministry but moderates did not want to abolish it
  • Moderates wanted to get rid of common law and replace it with something simpler
  • Radicals didn't want peace with the Netherlands but the moderates were still able to secure victory for the new Council of State
  • Moderates decided to resign their authority and give their powers to Cromwell

Evaluation

Only lasted from July-December because of the massively differing religious views which meant they could make no agreements
