Sympathomeddullary Pathway

Activation of the SAM pathway by stress results in impulses the travelling rapidly from the brainstem centres via neural pathways (nerves) to the adrenal medulla. Adrenaline and noradrenaline released into the bloodstream travel around the body. They increase heart rate and blood pressure, speeding up the supply of oxygen to the muscles so it can be used in physical activity.
