Successes and faliures of the new deal

Advantages

  • The new deal restored confidence in the American economy
  • Roosevelt only reopened the Well organised banks, this meant the american people would trust them with there money
  • It dropped the unemployment from 25% to 14% by 1937
  • Schools, hospitals and roads where built, which benefitted the country
  • capitilism was saved
  • It helped farmers, Roosevelt engrouaged farmers to not produce goods, this meant that they could increase prices on goods
  • Roosevelt had "fireside chats" in which he would talk to nation via radio and talk about his ideas, this assured people that the goverment would assit during the great depression for the first time.
  • It created trust between employers and workers. This was because Roosevelt was sympathetic towards workers

Disadvantages

  • Repbulicans accused it of wasting money
  • went against the american tradition of Laize fairre and also meant the government interferd with the ecomnomy
  • The Supreme court saw the New Deal as unconstiutional
  • Some Americans resented paying higher taxes to help with the new deal
  • There was violent clashes between unionest and employeers.
  • When Roosevelt withdrew some spending to see the outcome in 1937, the econmy immedatly slummped and therefore meant that America would be depent on goverment money for longer than thought, this did not please some Americans
  • It did solve unemployment, which was high until America entered the war
  • The new deal didn't solve the economy, the only way the economy would be better was the end of world war 2.
  • The new deal descriminated against African americans, Immagrents and woman as jobs where aimed at white men
  • Some people drew comparsions to the new deal and socalism, as elements of the new deal where similar to the work of Hitler.

Evaluation

Even though the New Deal had its disvantages such as being unconstational, the clashes between unioiest and employeers and the fact it didn't stop unemployment and economic weakness which could only be solved by war. It did put the country in better off state then it was, the goverment finally realised that they would have to have some type of involment in ecnomy and Roosevelts actions put peoples faith back into the goveremnent and ecomnomy.
