Success and failure of New Deal for society and Government.

Advantages

  • New Deal restored faith in government after Laissez-faire.
  • Preserved democracy and avoided swing to Communism and Fascism.
  • Created a semi-welfare sate, providing pensions and state help.
  • 200,000 black americans received benefits from CCC: slum clearance and housing benefits.
  • Some women achieved higher prominent positions. Eleanor Roosevelt.

Disadvantages

  • Too much power was given to federal government- went against rugged individualism.
  • new social welfare encouraged people to live off the state.
  • too much power given to trade unions.
  • In 1935, Supreme court ruled that NRA was unconstitutional.
  • In 1936, the AAA was unconstitutional,.
  • New Deal discriminated against black people: no work + lower wages.
  • state governments tried to avoid social security payment to women.
  • NIRA codes of 1933 required women to be paid less than men.
  • Only 8000 women were employed by CCC out of the 2.75 million people involved.

Evaluation

The attempts failed: 1) unconstitutional because Roosevelt was going to destroy the position of the Supreme Court. 2) Roosevelt failed to consult senior members and many Conservative Democrats opposed his reform.
