  • easy to replicate
  • provides quantitative data
  • easily analysed statistically


  • data is not in depth so important information may be missed
  • behaviours may be missed if they is no coding scheme
  • gives restricted views of what is actually happening


structured observation -> design type of coding scheme to record participant behaviour -> 2 ways in how they can be recorded -> behaviour checklist or coding scheme
