Advantages

  • Higher response rates
  • Can 'probe' the participants responses by asking follow up  questions
  • Can assess the truthfulness of the participant
  • Can maintain the focus of the research
  • Easy to analyse and put into statistical terms
  • Give QUANTITAVTIVE data

Disadvantages

  • Participant might want to impress or please the researcher
  • Age/gender of the interviewer may influence the participants answers
  • Time consuming, less representative
  • Limits possible answers

Evaluation

Structured interview is when the researcher asks a number of questions from an interview schedule.
