Structured interviews

Advantages

  • Reliable - Structured interviews can be repeated exactly the same as it was the first time. This is due to the questions being written down.
  • Quick and cheap - Because the process is structured it means that the researcher simply has to ask the questions, unlike unstructured interviews which would mean that the researcher has to explore other questions etc.
  • Can collect more data - Due to it being structured it is less time consuming, this means that the interviewer can interview more people making it more representative.
  • Low researcher bias - Researcher bias is minimised as they word the questions exactly the same unlike with unstructured interviews where how they ask the questions can have a big effect on the outcome.

Disadvantages

  • Inflexibility - interviewers cannot change their questions as it would cause researcher bias.
  • Some researcher bias - The researcher can infuence the answer of the question by tone of voice and body language etc.
  • Validity - It is often that interviewee's will misunderstand questions making it invalid
  • Social desirability bias - People may change their answers to appear better than someone else.
