Strengths and Weaknesses of Psychodynamic Approach

Advantages

  • Focused on the effects that childhood experiences have on the developing personality.
  • Led to other psychologists including Piaget developing theories on childhood. (Development theory)
  • Takes both nature and nurture into account (Nature: ID,Ego,Super Ego/ Nurture: Parents,Childhood experiences)

Disadvantages

  • It is unfalsifiable because the assumptions can not be scientifically measured or proved wrong
  • It is deterministic-suggests that behaviour is predetermined and people do not have free will (Freuds psychosexual stages)

Evaluation

This may not be an adequate explanation for mental illnesses because there is no definitive evidence for the unconscious mind.
However studies have found that childhood experiences can affect your mental health in later life (Hammersley et al- Childhood trauma hallucinations and bipolar) (Fergusson - Childhood abuse and mental illnesses).
