Strengths and weaknesses of Castile

Advantages

  • Large population (5 million)
  • Castillian Cortes had 3 houses and only one cortes (parliamentary party)
  • Big wool business
  • Public saw their royal family meaning more support for them
  • Unified state
  • Single coinage and language
  • Strong monarchy
  • Strong economy

Disadvantages

  • Monarchs decisions had to go through the Cortes
  • Weak Cortes
  • Clashes with Portugal, France and Aragon
  • Struggles in the North

Evaluation

Castile was a more strong and unified state and had very few weaknesses, the marriage between Isabella and Ferdinand would mean that Aragon would be gaining more than Castile would be as they would be gaining a unified and economically strong ally.
