Strengths and limitations of natural + quasi experiments

  • Useful where it would be impractical or impossible to manipulate variables
  • High ecological validity

  • Not always possible for a causal relationship to be seen

Overall, I think that in an experiment where it would be necessary to test a single hypothesis, the limitations of using a natural or quasi experiment outweighs any advantage. This is because for many psychological investigations, a causal relationship between the dependent and independent variables must be seen in order for a hypothesis to be proven or disproven. Therefore, unless it is merely observation rather than an experiment, natural or quasi experiments would not be appropriate.
