stengths and limitations of postmordernist view of changing class structure.

?

stengths and limitations of postmodernist view of changing class structure.

Advantages

  • explains changes in post industrial societies, especially to do with wealth (material possessions) and knowledge based economies.
  • recognises diversity and a variety of different dimensions to social inequality: not just class we have to consider age, ethnicity and culture.
  • emphasizes importances of culture and status in patterns of inequality.
  • Acknowledges the changing and fragmented nature of social inequality.

Disadvantages

  • lacks empirical evidence
  • ignores evidence of hardening class inequalities i.e. under class and super rich.
  • doesn't acknowledge the link between the way class and other aspects of inequality may reenforce one and other.
  • enthocentric - only based on western societies
  • Ignores significance of underclass development and demonisation of under class. Owen Jones.

Evaluation

Comparision to other theories; - Marxist would criticise the view that class is becoming fragmented when looking at the proletrastion of middle class jobs. Braverman 1974. - Feminist would criticise the way postmodernist ignore the link between class and gender.   Overall, although it is significant to study fragmentisation and diversity of contemporary society and class, evidence outweighs the view that class is less significant.
