Standard Components

Advantages

  • Ensures consistency of flavour, texture, weight, shape, and colour (identical each time)
  • Saves preparation time
  • Guaranteed quality (if accurate specification produced)
  • Speeds up manufacturing process
  • Less effort and skill required by staff
  • Less machinery/specialist equipment required
  • Less risk of cross contamination
  • Components can be bought in bulk
  • Can save manufacturer money
  • Wider range of products can be produced from the standard component

Disadvantages

  • Depending on manufacturer to supply a product can be less reliable e.g production line delayed
  • Can be more expensive than making yourself
  • Sensory qualities may be inferior to fresh ingredients
  • More storage space may be required
  • Special storage conditions may be required
  • Longer time required for ordering and supplying
  • No control over making/quality
  • Can't always guarantee safety (e.g allergy free)
  • May use unwanted colourings/additives

Evaluation

A standard component is a pre-manufactured product that is used in the manufacturing of another product. Why do manufacturers use standard components? As well as saving time, using a standard component can ensure a consistent product is produced. If a manufacturer is to use a standard component from another supplier, it is essential that a precise and accurate specification is produced. It is important that the component meets the standards set by the manufacturer, so they will check whether the product uses additives, it's nutritional profile, the source of ingredients, and sensory qualities.
