Specialization (Division of Labor)

Advantages

  • Full use is made of everyone's abilities
  • Time is saved, because individuals can earn more experience in doing a specific task, and hence, they can increase the rate of production
  • Gives specific countries such as Cuba (Specialized in making cuban cigars) the opportunity for international trade
  • Allows the use of machinery, which again, saves time and effort

Disadvantages

  • Work may become boring and repetitive
  • Workers may feel alienated, as the may feel unimportant because they can no longer see the final result of their efforts
  • People become too dependent upon each other
  • Products are all the same., because they are standardized. This may not satisfy everyone's needs, as they may have different tastes

Evaluation

Because of specialization, everyone has the opportunity to gain more experience to fulfill a specific operation. This can increase the rate of production, thereby improving efficiency. Also, the division of labor allows the use of machinery, which again saves time and effort. Furthermore, specialization gives countries, such as Cuba, the opportunity for international trade, as they are very capable in producing cigars. However, work may become too repetitive and boring, because workers will perform the same operation at a daily basis. Also, they may feel alienated as they are unable to see the final outcome of their products. Moreover, products can be standardized, and this may be a disadvantage for some.
