Advantages

  • Can use social epidemiology to increase community participation through empowerment and social capital (Campbell & Jovchelovitch 2000)
  • Illustrates that the major health improvements in the UK don't span across all structures of the population
  • Investigate current issues such as mental health, substance abuse, and growing epidemic of diabetes
  • Provides an idea of the contributing factors to individual patterns of health

Disadvantages

  • Many different determinants and outcomes and so models become complex and harder to understand
  • Patterns at local levels can happen across many structures and so may become hard to understand in a global context
  • Identifying where the differences lie doesn't provide a cause - What about those structures are causing the differences, or is it simply the structures themselves i.e. are differences in age because of natural ageing or social behaviours of different age groups

Evaluation

Social epidemiology is useful for understanding disease among different structures in the population, however models should continually be refined as they are complex
