Social Epidemiology: Infodemiology Critique

Advantages

Get information in real-time and so stay up-to-date with current issues
Can be used for many different things such as movement during disease outbreaks and vaccination use - Reveal unique insights
Provides a different image of public health because there are less restrictions and formalities
Successfully used to predict norovirus outbreak

Disadvantages

Complicated process as will find lots of irrelevant information to filter through
People won't share everything so details of the situation will be missing
Using secondary data means that you may not have everything you need e.g. may not know how long the illness lasted
New field so needs lots of improvements e.g. need to learn how to filter out biases in data

Evaluation

Infodemiology will provide a useful understanding of disease in social context however there are issues with data collection and analysis due to the early stages of the work
