Sieve elements vs Companion cells

Similarities

  • Mitochondria
  • ER
  • Cellulose cell wall
  • Plasmodesmata between them

Differences

  • Sieve elements contain sieve plates where the end walls of two sieve elements meet
  • No Nucleus or Ribsosomes in sieve elements
  • Companion cells contain a large number of mitochondria and ribosomes as they are very metabolically active
  • There are vacuoles in the companion cells but they remain very small, also contains nucleus.

Overall comparison

Sieve elements only contain ER and mitochondria whereas the companion cells contain ribosomes, nucleus and vacuole as well.
