Shield vs Composite Volcanoes

Similarities

  • Found on plate margins and 'hot spots'
  • Fertile soils surrounding the volcano
  • Dangerous (although Composite volcanoes tend to have more dangerous erutptions)
  • Lava is erupted
  • Can be a tourist attraction

Differences

  • Ash is also erupted = Composite
  • Steep sides = Composite    vs   Gentle sloping side = Shield
  • Infrequent erruptions= Composite vs Frequent Erutptions= Shield
  • Acidic Lava = Composite   vs  Alkaline Lave = Shield
  • Pyroclastic Flow = Composite
  • Lahars (mudflow) = Composite

Overall comparison

Composite Volcanoes have more violent, but less frequent eruptions. The lava is thick (viscous) and acidic. The volcano is made from layers of ash and lava, creating a steep sided volcano. E.g Mt St Helens
Shield Volcanoes have frequent eruptions although these tend to be less violent. The alkalinic lava is runny and flows a long way before cooling. These volcanoes have relatively gentle sides. E.g Mauna Loa (Hawaii)
