Causes

  • Rained a lot three moths prior making the ground already saturated
  • 1 moths worth of rainfall occurred in 2 days
  • lots of building on floodplains making impermeable surfaces resulting in a shorter lag time and flash flooding
  • 5 rivers flow through Sheffield
  • river don broke its banks
  • Sheffield is bowl shaped meaning steep slopped, can result in shorter lag times
  • La nina fetched low pressure

Overall summary

Sheffield has now taken future management into account. They have started protection and enhancement of the environment by creating wash lands, unblocking debris and vegetation as well as being tougher on planning laws and regulations. Also they have implemented monitoring stations along the coast enabling them to provide flood warnings/alerts. 530 flood defences have been built along the river don and insurance schemes have paid for some.
