Schaffer and Emerson (Stages of Attachment)

Advantages

  • Used two different methods of measurement
  • They were studied every month for a year rather than just one month (Longitudinal Study) which make it more representative
  • Has ecological validity because it's in their own home rather than a lab

Disadvantages

  • All the children are from the same background and area so its an unrepresentative sample which may bias the results
  • Home visits aren't good at controlling the confounding variables
  • The infants may become used to the people doing the visits which means they will no longer be strangers

Evaluation

A longitudinal Study based on 60 newborns in a working-class area of Glasgow. Studied every month for a year then at 18 months.Measure by Separation protest and Stanger anxiety.Attachments are made by how responsive people are to the child rather than the time spent with them. Multiple attachments are normal and are of similar quality which disproves Bowlby's theory.
