Rutland Water Reservoir

Advantages

  • Economic:
  • The reservoir boosts the local economy- it's a popular tourist attraction because of the wildlife and recreation facilities.
  • Environmental:
  • Hundreds of  species of birds nest around the reservoir and it is home to a large variety of habitats.
  • It is an area where wildlife is protected and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
  • Social:
  • Lots of recreational activites take place such as: sailing, windsurfing, birdwatching and cycling.
  • Many jobs have been created to build and maintain the reservoir, run the nature reserve and recreational activities.
  • Schools also visit for educational trips.

Disadvantages

  • Economic:
  • Around 6km^2 of land was flooded to create the reservoir. This included farmland, so some farmers lost their livelihood.
  • Environmental:
  • A large area was flooded to create the reservoi, which destroyed some habitats.
  • Social:
  • Two villages were demolished to make room for the reservoir.

Evaluation

Background:It is in the East Midlands and was created in the 1970's.It covers a 12km^2 area and is filled with water from River Welland and River Nene.It was created to supply the East Midlands with more water- enough to cope with rapid population growth.Areas around the reservoir are also used as a nature reserve and for recreation.Sustainable
