- Love sick
- Follows the Petrarchan protagonist in that a young man falls in love at first sight, but the woman prolongs his wooing in order to test his love for her. The protagonist becomes melancholy, sad and lonely, isolating himself and using poetry as a form of expression. Right from the off, Romeo is seen as lovesick "Out of her favour where I am in love". He says of his unrequited love "Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs", alluding to the melancholy and lonely love that Romeo has.
