Revelation

Revealtion is God revealing himself. Christians believe that God delibrately reveals his qualities, character and plans to humans. There are two types of revelation: General and Special.

Revelation

Advantages

  • It turns people's lives around
  • It gives meaning to people's lives
  • Helps people to feel connected to God
  • Gives people support and hope during hard times
  • So many people have had a religious experince it is hard to ignore
  • We can generally trust our senses and so we can believe that a religous experience has occured
  • There is nothing to gain from lying about a religious experience so why would someone make it up

Disadvantages

  • Some stories seem unbelievable
  • It is hard to understand things to do with revelation e.g. tounges
  • Not sufficient evidence
  • In some ways people may feel disappointed if they don't have a revelation
  • People may 'make up' experiences to help themselves in life

Evaluation

Revelation is good as it gives hope to many people that experience them. People feel connected to God and develop a more personal relationship with God. Also revelation can turn people's lives around e.g. Nicky Cruz. It is hard to discount revelation as so many people have experienced it. However revelation does have weaknesses. Stories of revelation can seem unbelievable such as stories of people being miraculously healed at places such as Lourdes. As revelation is a personal thing people are not able to see if it actually did happen so there is not sufficient evidence to support it.
