Renaissance

Causes

  • Occurs in Italy because of crusades and trade threat lead to contact with Byzantine civilizations .They were rediscovering ideals of Ancient Rome since Rome was the center of the Empire.
  • Cities not completely abandoned in Middle Ages and cities become more prosperous with trade and manufacturing and become very powerful Italy had no single ruler & was composed of rich city states ruled by wealthy families.
  • Many Italian merchants spent their money on art . Cities become competitive and great rivalry existed between states.

Effects

  • Scholars based in Constantinople ( Easter Roman Empire) continued classical traditions which with increased trade ideas gradually filtered back. When Constantinople captured by Turks many Christian scholars fled to Italy and  brought with them ancient manuscripts dating back to Greek and Roman Empires.
  • Florence: Medici Family ( banking and trade), Milan : Sforza family ( Overseas trade via Genoa), Venice: the Doges ( trade with Far East).
  • Employed artists and architects . Medici family brought some of the worlds best artists to Florence.

Overall summary

Previously the church had controlled education and universities . Scholars were expected to learn from the Bible and not from the natural world.Opposition to the church was heresy.By the C14th some parts of the church were less rigid  there was a new state of mind among artists , doctors, scientists. people wanted to study the world around them. The attitude of enquirer that had been common in classical scholars was reborn during the Rennaissance
