Referendums

Advantages

  • More direct democracy.
  • Outside UK used more- Switzerland have 4 per year.

Disadvantages

  • Plato- 'people want the elected representatives to make decisions'.
  • Turnout often low- Welsh assembly- 35%
  • 'Alien to our traditions'
  • Timing of them can manipulate views- Scottish referendum.

Evaluation

The UK should not use referendums more because the turnout is often not high enough to constitute being democratic.
