Similarities

  • The Anglican and Catholic Sunday morning both have Eucharist; the Catholic church call it Eucharist Mass.
  • Anglican and Catholic: a confession of sin and request for God's mercy is said by everyone (called the penitential rite by Catholics).
  • There are readings (including one gospel reading) and a sermon - this is known as the 'liturgy of the Word'. The Nicene Creed and the Apostle's Creed is then recited. The priest says prayers over bread and wine - this is called the liturgy of the Eucharist. Then the congregation says the Lord's Prayer and 'shares the peace' by shaking hands. They then receive the bread and wine and Catholics call this the rite of Communion"

Differences

  • Catholic church's content is set out by the 'Roman Missal' whilst Anglican Church's content is set out by the 'Common Worship' book. The Orthodox service is the Divine Liturgy' - which centres on the Eucharist
