Advantages

  • Good absorbency - Takes dye well.
  • Comfortable, especially in warm weather.
  • One of the strongest natural fibres.
  • Even stronger when wet.
  • Can be washed/dry cleaned.
  • Anti-fungal/anti-microbial.

Disadvantages

  • Can have stiff/brittle handle.
  • Doesn't drape well.
  • Not very durable.
  • Little elasticity.
  • Difficult to work with.
  • Creases easily
  • Expensive to manufacture.

Evaluation

Plant which is a member of the nettle family. The bast of the stem produces the ramie fibres. Requires chemicals to de-gum the fibres. Used for shirts and suits, fishing nets, fire hoses, canvases, upholstery and curtains.
