Rahe et al. (US Navy Personnel)

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • Life changes will have a different effect on different people - individual differences..
  • Study used US Navy Personnel - results are gender and culturally specific and when generalised to others it must be done with caution.
  • This was a correlation study. Correlations do not necessarily mean causation, only an association.
  • The study requires informed consent and debriefing.
  • Recalling traumatic life events might put participants in distress.

Evaluation

The SSRS do not take into account individual differences. Life changes have a different effect on different people. This study is not representative of the entire population as the study was only done on US Navy personnel - results are gender and culturally specific. Also a correlation does not necessarily mean causation. Ethical issues concerning this study are: the study requires informed consent and full debriefing and also participants recalling traumatic life events might cause them distress.
