Qualitative Secondary Data

Advantages

  • Valid data
  • Not produced/influenced by sociologists
  • In-depth and rich qualitative data

Disadvantages

  • Unlikely to provide objective view
  • Analysis based on interpretation
  • Often not possible to quantify data - prevents generalisation
  • Unreliable and difficult to replicate

Evaluation

On the one hand, qualitative secondary data is useful as it not produced by the sociologist themselves, so they are not collecting supporting evidence that would be biased in favour of their point. However, the analysis of the data is down to the sociologist's interpretation which could then lead to a bias and subjective view. Qualitative data means that the sociologist has in-depth and rich evidence to analyse, allowing them to look deeper and broader at their topic. On the contrary to this point, the data is often not possible to quantify, meaning that the sociologist cannot make generalisations.
