Quasi experiments

Advantages

  • useful when it would be unethical to manipulate the independent variable eg Sperry
  • Increased application to real life as independent variable are natural and real issues

Disadvantages

  • lack of control over extraneous variables
  • difficult to replicate
  • could still be subject to demand characteristics
  • difficult to obtain sufficient participants

Evaluation

e.g Sperry could not have manipulated the independent variable of severed corpous collosum's himself as this is illegal but he could still study the effect if them as they had occurred naturally to treat epilepsy. This can also be applied to real life as epilepsy is a real condition which affects many people. However Sperry had very little control over extraneous variables and the participants may have been atypical of those with a split brain.
