PP Panic Critical Analysis

Advantages

  • Biological account can explain how the extreme physical symptoms develop
  • Catastrophic misinterpretation is supported by evidence from double disassociation, implicit testing and causal manipulations
  • Enhanced interoception helps to under unique focus on physical symptoms among panic patients
  • Use of safety behaviours help to understand why negative beliefs persist
  • Response to different drugs than other anxiety disorders suggests unique biological pathway
  • Cognitive therapy increases individual control over symptoms and recovery
  • Cognitive therapy more effective than drug therapy, particular if combined with interoceptive exposure
  • Manipulation of experimental paradigms allows causal links to be investigated

Disadvantages

  • Biological theory does not explain why the symptoms are distressful in panic individuals
  • Culture impacts prevalence and expression of panic
  • Limited application of safety behaviours to clinical understanding
  • Exposure was just as effective as cognitive, and was not improved by combining them, suggesting that cognitive theory may not completely explain panic
  • Biological challenge tests may interpret results incorrectly
  • Ethical issues of inducing panic

Evaluation

The biological account of panic and interoception helps understand unique focus on physical symptoms, complemented by the cognitive explanation of why these symptoms are distressing. Cognitive therapy is particularly effective however so is exposure, and so may need further development of theories to account for these trends.
