Political Unrest

Causes

  • The assassination of Kurt Eisner - this was the first attempt of a political takeover and around 100,000 Freikorps were used to put down the movement
  • Treaty of Versailles - the Weimar government had been put in an awkward situation, leaving them no option but to sign the treaty soon after they came to power. The German people did not see it like this and therefore, labelled the signatories the 'November Criminals', leading to decreased support for the new Weimar government
  • Weimar Government - Proportional representation led to instability within the government and, consequently, the German people lost faith in them.

Effects

  • The Spartacist Uprising (LEFT-WING)  - January 6th 1919, Luxemburg and Liebknecht led 100, 000 Communists to demonstrate throughout Berlin and take over key buildings
  • The Kapp Putsch (RIGHT WING) - March 1920, Dr Wolfgang Kapp, marched on Berlin in attempt to overthrow the Weimar Government and bring back the Kaiser.
  • Munich Putsch - 8th November 1923, Hitler walks into a meeting being held by the Bavarian Government  announcing that he was taking control of the German government.
  • Several assassinations of politicians e.g. Erzberger (1921) and Rathenau (1922)
