Policy of appeasement - for and against.

Advantages

  • 1.  Sympathy for Germany
  • -  Treaty of Versailles was too harsh
  • -  Germany should be treated fairly
  • -  1936 Rhineland - Germany was going into their back yard
  • -  1938 Anshluss - Self determination
  • 2.  The desire for peace
  • -  Avoid another war
  • -  Trusted League of Nations
  • -  Great depression
  • 3.  The Threat of Communism
  • -  Britain and France could not protect countries - Soviet Union could
  • -  They feared Soviet Communism as much as the Nazis
  • 4.  Time to re-arm
  • -  Britain was not ready to fight
  • -  Giving into Hitler's demands postponed war

Disadvantages

  • 1.  The appeasers misjudged Hitler
  • -  Treated Hitler as a rational politician
  • -  Actually he was a tyrant who would interpret any concession as weakness
  • -  The more he gave - the more he demanded
  • 2.  Appeasement was morally wrong
  • -  Appeasement was weakness and cowadice
  • -  Germany was allowed to break international agreements without punishment
  • -  They abandoned Czechoslovakia
  • 3.  The appeasers missed excellent chances to stop Hitler
  • -  Missed vital opportunities to resist him:
  • -  1936:  Rhineland, any sign of retaliation from France they would have withdrawn
  • -   1938:  Munich, Britain and France abandoned Czechoslovakia when they could have put up resistance

Evaluation

Appeasement:  This was a policy adopted by Britain PM - Chamberlain, it meant giving way to Hitler's demands in order to prevent war.  It was based on the idea that Hitler wanted to be reasonable demands, when these were satisfied he would stop.
