Ontological Argument

Advantages

  • If existence is a real predicate then it is true
  • As A Priori- it doesn't need proof unlike A Posteriori
  • It has been wrongly interpreted (due to Kant)- Anselm is just trying to prove his faith, not prove the existence of God
  • Anselm is a Critical Rationalist, not a Strong Rationalist

Disadvantages

  • Existence is not a real predicate
  • You can't jump from the definition of God to the existence of God
  • Reducto ad absurdum
  • Circular Logic

Evaluation

More disadvantages to advantages; however the point about rationalism could render these criticisms as meaningless
