NRMS are only ever short lived.

Advantages

  • likely to 'fizzle out' once the immediacy of the event to which they are reacting to wears off.
  • Often held together by the charismatic leader so death can result in break up of the group.
  • If they grow and take root, loose their nrm characteristics. e.g. early methodists were once a 'sect'.
  • Some people would not consider them a NRM as they are no longer 'new'. Weber- 'short lived' is a characteristic.

Disadvantages

  • Some groups still hold the same views e.g. Jehovahs witness.
  • Sometimes group is passed down to a relative, and often the group has grown close that they remain without the original leader.
  • Some clearly do become well established and remain their characteristics e.g. jehovahs witness.
  • Seems un realistic to assume that a group is no longer a NRM just because they lose one of the characteristics, does not make them mainstream denomination.

Evaluation

Seems that it is very rare that NRMS are long term however, it does occur in some cases e.g. JW. Although, it needs to be considered whether these really are a NRM.Perhaps should be an imbetween.  Although, technically still maintain essential beliefs thus proving that not all NRMS are short lived.
