Naturalism- Meta Ethics

Advantages

  • Simple rules that can be followed by everyone (absolute)
  • Supports the use of reason and emotion, so it is open to everyone, religious or not
  • Secondary precepts allow enough flexibility to accommodate different cultures
  • Primary precepts are common to society, thus suggesting it is universal
  • Focuses on character of human beings and how we flourish (eudaimonia)

Disadvantages

  • Hume's Law- Can't go from an is (fact) to an ought(reason), criticises Naturalistic fallacy
  • Suggests we are all similar and morals are essentially non-subjective as they are fixed (absolute) and not relative
  • Suggests we are all fixed in our nature which isn't correct
  • Hard to apply to complex situations
  • Too focused on reason and fails to acknowledge that we can't be trusted to make a emotionally empty decision which is moral- seen in The Fall
  • Interpreted rigidly by RCC and can't apply to individual moral problems

Evaluation

It provides a system of evaluating statements and moral acts which can be used alongside positivist ideology.
