Personality

Role

  • Napoleon is:
  • Ruthless: Napoleon does not care about the welfare of the other animals, as we can tell from the rations and stealing that he is behind. He adopts puppies for the reason of raising an army to protect himself, as well as forcing a 60 hour week onto the animals- whilst he does nothing.
  • Selfish: Despite the use of "Comrades", Napoleon sees himself as better than the rest of the animals. He changes the rules which the animals agreed on to suit his needs and wants, for example "No animal shall drink alcohol to excess". During the fight for power, he criticises Snowball's plans for building a windmill, however after he eliminates his competition the windmill is constructed and he uses lies to explain himself.
  • As bad as farmer Jones: By the end of the book Napoleon has transformed into an animal version of farmer Jones, due to factors such as his accommodation, clothes, rules, brutality and drinking habits. The commandments have been forgotten by the end of the book, and the animals (Except for the pigs and dogs), are back where they started off.
  • Cunning: Napoleon uses Snowball to blame for anything which occurs, makes false claims and lies to his comrades. He also exiles any animals who he forced into admitting had been working with Snowball to keep control over his people.
  • Leader of the animal's revolution
  • The ruler of Animal Farm

Development (Growth & change)

Other information

  • At the beginning not much is known about Napoleon except he generally got his own way. He is known to be a coward (As he does not fight during the battle of the Cowshed), showing that Snowball would have made a better leader. He gradually changes his own rules to suit his needs and wants, which by the end are very similar to the traits of farmer Jones. He goes from being a believer of Animalism to the destroyer of it.
  • Animalism failed because farmer Jones was replaced by someone with the exact same traits (by the end)- Napoleon
