My Last Duchess & Ozymandias

?

My Last Duchess & Ozymandias

Similarities

  • characters; male, high status, power, tyrannical
  • both lost power/control
  • subjects are inanimate objects: statue/ picture
  • both use power in a negative way
  • both speak of themselves in a narcissistic way

Differences

  • source of power; empire vs duchess
  • king/ duke
  • one lost power due to death (murder) one lost power due to time
  • one has artwork of them, one has artwork of someone else
  • forms : sonnet/ drammatic monologue
  • different rhyming patterns
  • MLD has two shifts of power
  • O = second recount

Overall comparison

Both Ozymandias and My Last Duchess have the theme of control and power, which is used in a negative way, however, the King loses power due to the passing of time, whilst the Duke loses power as his source of power is destroyed (murdered). Both of the subjects are inanimate objects, in Ozymandias it is a statue of the King, whilst in My Last Duchess it is a painting of the Duchess. During both of the poems, the King and Duke make sure to speak of themselves in a narcissistic way.

The overall comparison wasn't that overall. And the Duke doesn't lose any power in MLD; this is seen by the way that he already objectifies his next wife, etc.
