Munich Putsch

Causes

  • Treaty of Versailles - ARTICLE 231 put all blame on Germany and said they had to pay £6.6 billion in reparations. This made Hitler angry and he wanted to do something rather than relying on the government who had let Germany down in the past by signing the treaty.
  • Hyperinflation - 130,000 DM was worth 1 US dollar in November 1923 (month of Munich Putsch)
  • Hitler had the support of the army - Ludendorff - and  he wanted to prove to the army that he could take over the government.

Effects

  • 8th November - Hitler and SA march into a meeting being addressed by Von Kahr. He takes Kahr and his ministers into a side room at gunpoint to persuade them to support Hitlers attempted overthrowing of the Government.
  • 9th November - Ludendorff lets Kahr and his men go who then tell the police. The police then block the 3000 Nazis marching. All Nazis link arms and police shoot, killing 16 Nazis and only 3 police men.

Overall summary

Hitler gets arrested with Ludendorff and they stand trial in 1924 with Rohm - Hitler gets five years but only 9 month on parole.
