Development (Growth & change)

Other information

  • At the start of the play, he says he will never marry. After being tricked into believing Beatrice is deeply in love with him, he changes his mind and marries her. He also believes that Hero is innocent even though she is accused by his friends.
  • Has known Beatrice before the beginning of the play.
  • Is friends with Claudio and Don Pedro.
  • Contrasts with Claudio. Benedick represents a sincere and clever character in love with Beatrice because of her personality as well as her looks, while Claudio is not as sincere (he makes sure that Hero is rich before deciding to marry her) and not as clever (is easily fooled that Hero has betrayed him). Claudio also falls in love with Hero only for her appearance and does not bother to get to know her personality ("But fare thee well, most foul, most fair! Farewell, thou pure impiety and impious purity!" to Hero when he thinks she has betrayed him).
