Moroccan Crisis 1905-1906

Causes

  • The Kaiser visited Morocco in 1905 and rode the streets on a white horse accompanied by a military band and Moroccan troops.
  • He announced that Germany supported an independent Morocco open to the peaceful competition of all nations for trade and called for an international conference.
  • It was a dramatic gesture aimed at preventing France from occupying Morocco and testing the strength of the Entente Cordiale.

Effects

  • The conference was held in 1906 at Algeciras.
  • Only Austria-Hungary and Morocco supported Germany.
  • Britain and Russia supported France.
  • France had to recognise the independence of Morocco but was given joint control with Spain of the Moroccan police.
  • Germany had failed to prevent France from getting a foothold in Morocco.
  • Germany was refused and had no say.

Overall summary

-The Entente Cordiale was strengthened.                                                                                                                                                             -Britain was concerned about Germany's action and began secret military talks with France.                                                                              -Britain had no intention of making a formal alliance with France, but France felt more confident of Britain's support.                                        -Britain appeared to be talking more of an interest in European matters.                                                                                                           -Germany humiliated.
