  • Seismic waves of earthquake travelled towards north east coast of Japan at 3km/s

Effects

  • Primary -
  • immediate power cuts affected 4 million homes
  • death toll reached over 18,000 after a week
  • 425,000 living in shelters
  • Tsunami 10m high.
  • Buildings survived earthquake then destroyed by tsunami - 35% buildings destroyed
  • Secondary -
  • Radiation risk for the residents who lived near the power plant
  • Coastline dropped by 1 metre

Immediate responses - back up batteries kicked in, temporary shelters filed. Long term - take japan 5 years and cost between £75 and £145 billionJapan shifted 3m out to sea. Prepared for earthquake but not tsunami.
