Measuring Crime: Victim Surveys

Advantages

  • Focuses on what the victim believes is the central issue
  • Develops trust/rapport so enables sociologist to see through eyes of victim (verstehen)
  • Able to make sure researcher shares same meaning as victim to increase validity
  • Richer, vivid, qualitative data about experience of being victim

Disadvantages

  • Unreliable as cant be replicated or verified by another sociologist
  • Data hard to analyse and categorise
  • Time consuming to conduct and transcribe
  • Expensive as researcher need training

Evaluation

The CSEW collects data using structures interviews. Left realist and feminist victim surveys tend to use unstructured interviews to gather their data and investigate how people feel about being victims of crime. There are benefits to victim surveys in that verstehen can be created by developing rapport with the victim and being able to see the crime through their eyes but as they use interviews to gather this data they are not necessarily reliable because they cant be replicated or verified by another researcher.
