Martin luther king jr

Advantages

  • brilliant orator his speeches inspired a community to do more to push for equality
  • took the initiative by coming to the forefront of the civil rights movement, which it had previously lacked
  • corageous
  • he had sucesses in Birmingham AL in 1963 and Selma in 1965
  • taking the moral high ground allowed him to gain sympathy from northern white liberals and also the federal government were forced to intervene
  • he was a pragmatist as he knew that black people could not overthrow a corrupt all white system of government
  • he took advantage of the growing popularity of the media by focusing his campaigns where he knew they were going to be.
  • his method of civil disobedience inspired many other campaigners, there is reports that the montgomery bus boycott was replicated in southern states and was successful

Disadvantages

  • his campaign was too slow which led to militancy in the mid 60's
  • His ideas were not original as he was inspired by ghandi in using civil disobedience
  • he did not relate to the northern ghetto living blacks on a spiritual or social level.
  • he alienated johnson by slating americas involvement in the vietnam war.
  • he was not 100% commited to his protest in chicago 1966 because he had focused his attention to socio-economic problems instead of civil rights
  • he did not fully think through his tactics when moving the campaign to the north
  • he failed at Albany 1961 because laurie pritchett did not react to the protesters
  • it can be argued that his biggest impact to the civil rights movement was after his death. he has a national holiday to comemerate his work

Evaluation

in conclusion, despite kings success in the south it can be argued that he did little for the civil rights movement, his campaign was too slow and managed to alienate many people such as the northern ghetto-livers, which was undoubtably damaging to his campaign. it can also be argued that kings greatest success came after his death. he gave inspiration many black people and other ethnic minorites to stand up for their rights and even today he has continued to inspire a nation, this is evident because of the national bank holiday in america which commemorates kings work
