Macbeth and Havisham

Similarities

  • In Macbeth there are soliloquies and in Havisham it is a dramatic monologue. In Havisham the dramatic monologue shows the depth of her loneliness and in Macbeth the soliloquies show how she is ruthless and how her ambition overrides everything that is thought of women.
  • Oxymoron's in both pieces. Havisham: "Beloved sweetheart *******". Macbeth: "Fair is foul, and foul is fair".
  • Colour - Macbeth: "making the green one red", green representing life and red representing death. Havisham: "dark green pebbles for eyes", shows how she has hardened over the years. Green representing jealousy and showing her wild side and that she is losing her mind.
  • There is still love after all that has happened
  • Havisham says "who did this/ to me?". She doesn't realise it was her who did it. In Macbeth she says "yet here's a spot". She doesn't realise what she has done. She has permanently given herself regret for what she has done.

Differences

  • Havisham says "some nights better". She reflects how she is happier at these times. In Macbeth: "Macbeth does murder sleep". Here Macbeth is told he will never sleep again.
  • Havisham is quite strong "dark green pebbles". 'pebbles' being hard shows her mental state. Unlike Macbeth who is quite weak being driven by Lady Macbeth to do what she wants in order for power.
  • Havisham is about revenge. Macbeth is about the greed and ambition for power.
  • Havisham is a "spinster", Lady Macbeth is married to Macbeth.

Overall comparison

Macbeth and Havisham are quite similar. They both give off an image that they are in control of their lives but really they're losing control of themselves and spiralling into insanity.
